Grammar is the study of the rules governing the use of a given natural language, and as such a field of linguistics. Traditionally, grammar included morphology and syntax, in modern linguistics commonly expanded by the subfields of phonetics, phonology, orthography, semantics, and pragmatics. In Linguistic Anthropology, there are four branches or subfields: Descriptive linguistics Studies the structure of language Studies the structure of language Ethnolinguistics Studies how languages and cultures are related Studies how languages and cultures are related Historical linguistics Studies [Its branches include linguistics, psychology, neuroscience and computer science] (Helen Day) [Linguistics page 5] Structural Linguistics A school of linguistics characterized by an emphasis on the overt formal features of language, especially of phonology, morphology, and syntax (Brett Armstrong) Another important issue is how linguistic evidence, together with evidence from other fields, like genetics and archeology, can be used to shed light on human prehistory.
